Jordan’s Trade Evolution. Building a Gateway Between the Arab World and the West
Published on: August 4, 2025

For centuries, Jordan has stood at the crossroads of civilizations; a connector between continents, ideas, and commerce. While lacking the natural resources of its neighbors, Jordan has steadily risen as a resilient trade facilitator and logistics gateway, capitalizing on its political stability, educated workforce, and forward-looking economic policies.

In recent years, Jordan’s trade strategy has focused on integration, specialization, and regional mediation. The nation’s numerous free trade agreements, including those with the United States, the European Union, and the Greater Arab Free Trade Area (GAFTA), give Jordanian companies unparalleled access to a combined market of over 1 billion consumers.

What makes Jordan’s positioning unique is its role as a neutral commercial bridge in a region often disrupted by geopolitical tensions. The country has served as a trade mediator between Gulf countries, the Levant, and North Africa; with growing partnerships spanning Iraq, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Türkiye. In 2022, Jordan revived a trilateral agreement with Egypt and Iraq to develop joint industrial zones and cross-border logistical systems.

A major driver of Jordan’s trade evolution is the Aqaba Special Economic Zone (ASEZ); a duty-free, low-tax region along the Red Sea. With its modern port facilities, ASEZ is poised to become a crucial transit hub for goods entering and exiting the Arab world. It offers companies streamlined customs, infrastructure incentives, and immediate proximity to the Suez Canal and African markets.

Another area where Jordan excels is in pharmaceuticals, ICT services, fertilizers, and garments. Its reputation for high-quality industrial output and competitive labor costs makes it a prime sourcing partner for international companies aiming to diversify their suppliers in the MENA region.

To support these developments, Jordan has invested in digital trade infrastructure, border security, and customs modernization. The National Export Strategy, launched in coordination with international development partners, lays out a roadmap to enhance competitiveness, simplify export procedures, and expand global reach.

Jordan’s collaboration with Türkiye is also gaining momentum, especially in textile trade, electronics, and agro-processing. At Go Trade Agency, we are witnessing an increasing demand from our Turkish suppliers to access Jordanian markets and, conversely, for Jordanian exporters to penetrate Türkiye and its surrounding trade routes.

In a global economy that values agility and access, Jordan is becoming a gateway of trust, consistency, and strategic orientation. As the country continues to evolve, its blend of tradition and trade innovation ensures that it will play a pivotal role in shaping the Arab region’s commercial future.
